New Goldilocks Planet Called Gliese 581G Found At 20 Light Years Away

This is why we love astronomy and the chase to find new planets: scientists have discovered the most Goldilocks planet ever! We’ve covered this aspect a couple of times as astronomers are looking for Earth-like planets in the Goldilocks zone. What’s that? The Goldilocks zone refers to a planet which isn’t too far or too close to a Sun, meaning that the planet is habitable for humans.

Gliese 581G Compared To Earth

Scientists have found a new planet called Gliese 581g and this made them all go crazy: why? Because it’s the first really truly Goldilocks planet. The Gliese 581g planet has an atmosphere, gravity, and the average temperature is -12 degrees Celsius. Yeah, it’s cold, but life is possible there.

Gliese 581G

The only problem for humans is that this planet is 20 light years away. For humans, but for astronomers this is not that far and they actually say that it’s very close. The Gliese 581g orbits around a red dwarf star called Gliese 581 or Gliza.

Gliese 581G

On a side note, no humans were spotted on the planet. Hehe… Anyway astronomers will study this planet in detail in order to find out whether we are alone in this vast Universe.

Similac Recall

Similac Formula Recall 2010

Abbott Laboratories announced a Similac recall due to possible contamination with beetles or their larvae. Read the press release below and how you can get more information about the recall of the powdered infant formula.

Abbott is initiating a proactive, voluntary recall of certain Similac-brand, powder infant formulas in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.

Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.

The recall of these powder infant formulas includes:

* Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
* Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

To immediately find out if the product in your possession is included in this recall, parents and caregivers should visit www.similac.com/recall/lookup, and type in their lot number to determine if their product is affected, or call (800) 986-8850.

Dr. Stephen Munday, Public Health Officer stated, “Since the flu vaccine takes about two weeks to become effective, we strongly advise all individuals to get their flu shots early to lessen their risk of contracting the flu this flu season. The Department is extremely excited about partnering with the Imperial Valley Expo and other local providers to host the Drive-Thru Flu Clinic once again this year.” Flu activity in the United States generally peaks between late December and early March.

The Public Health Department-sponsored flu clinics will be held on the following dates: Tuesday, September 21st from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (Public Health Dept.) Thursday, September 23rd from 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm (Public Health Dept.) Saturday, October 16th from 7:30 am – 11 am (I.V. Expo in Imperial)

This is a flu shot-only clinic event. This will be a collaborative effort between the Public Health Department, the Imperial Valley Expo, local healthcare providers and other partner agencies. Individuals attending this clinic should arrive in a vehicle and expect to stay with their vehicle while at the clinic. It is recommended that those who attend for a flu shot wear short sleeve shirts.
Flu shots will be available at the Public Health Department on a walk-in
basis during regular work hours (Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm) starting Monday, September 27th. The whooping cough and pneumonia vaccines will also be available on a walk-in basis. Flu Clinics for seniors are being held in various areas of the County. In addition, flu vaccine is available with local physicians and community clinics. Individuals who wish to receive the flu shot from their doctor will need to contact their healthcare provider directly about the availability of flu vaccine.
According to the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every year in the United States, an average 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and about 36,000 people die from the flu each year. Some people, such as older adults, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at higher risk for suffering serious complications from the flu. Influenza is an acute respiratory illness that is spread from infected persons to the throat or nose of others. Signs and symptoms of the flu include fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches. How health care reform could impact your debt load

More preventive care and prescriptions will be covered, but insurers will raise premiums to pay for these benefits. (©iStockphoto.com/Sean Locke) More preventive care and prescriptions will be covered, but insurers will raise premiums to pay for these benefits. (©iStockphoto.com/Sean Locke)

By Andrew Housser

Since President Obama's election, health care reform has been in the news almost continually. While the specifics of how the reform will impact consumers are uncertain, reform has become law and will affect household budgets.

The consumer cost implications of these reforms are very important. After all, health care debt contributed to more than 60 percent of bankruptcy filings in 2007, according to Harvard University research. With the first changes taking effect in the next few months, here is what you should know about how some of the most prominent reforms could affect your finances – and your likelihood of going into medical debt.

1) Adult children can have more coverage, longer

Parents who have young adult children and health insurance can breathe easier: Health care reform provides an additional coverage option. Adults can remain covered on their parent's health insurance policy until their 26th birthday.

Debt prognosis: Good. Students and young adults, including those still seeking employment in the tight job market, now have an option for insurance. In a medical emergency, they might be able to cover bills with insurance instead of credit cards.

2) Coverage limits are no more

Health care reform prohibits insurers from placing lifetime maximum limits on coverage. A Kaiser Family Foundation study found that at least 10 percent of cancer patients had treatment protocols that surpassed their insurance coverage limit, leaving them essentially without coverage. Other chronic conditions can be costly as well.

Debt prognosis: Good. Insurance now must cover all medical conditions, no matter the cost. Insured people will not have to take on dramatic debt to pay for care, although many people with chronic medical problems do go into debt to pay for care. Premiums, however, might increase to fund this richer benefit.

3) Families can get relief with premiums

The law gives help with premiums, starting in 2014, to people who buy their own health insurance -- that is, where an employer does not provide insurance. Many households will qualify for tax credits to keep premiums below 9.5 percent of income. Small businesses qualify for other premiums to help them provide coverage to employees.

Debt prognosis: Fair. Most people do not go into debt to pay for health insurance premiums, but the reform law requires people to carry health insurance. This provision will give some people assistance with premiums if needed.

4) More preventive care and prescriptions will be covered

Some observers argue that insurers will raise premiums to pay for these benefits. Like it or not, when insurance does not cover these costs, they all too often go unpaid when money is tight. Worse yet, people avoid getting the care they need because of the cost. That neglect can add up to greater health and financial problems.

Debt prognosis: Good. In terms of cost, most people will benefit from not paying extra for services beyond premiums they must pay anyway, but premiums might indeed be higher.

5) By 2014, insurers cannot exclude people based on pre-existing conditions

For the many people who cannot get health coverage because of medical conditions, this provision will make a significant financial difference. A similar provision states that insurers cannot charge higher premiums because of gender, health status or other factors

Debt prognosis: Excellent. In the past, people in these situations have had to go uninsured, and have been at great risk for falling into high levels of medical debt.

While the overall financial impact of the health care reform legislation remains up for heated debate, it is clear that many people will be able to breathe a sigh of relief at knowing they have more secure coverage. For individuals and families, some of the health reform legislation should make it easier to avoid catastrophic medical debt -- and to get and retain health insurance coverage.

Nurses Hope to Improve Health Care

The Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions have released a new report which they hope will have a positive impact on Healthcare. The report, titled "Experts and Evidence: Opportunities in Nursing," outlines research on nursing practice and workplaces. Through this report, the Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions has devised six initiatives that would improve health outcomes, increase access to health care, and make the system more sustainable. They include items such as creating an advisory committee between health, education, and labour ministers; supporting the development of nurse-led initiatives; and improving work environments.

Debbie Forward, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses' Union, says they have met with some of the health ministers, who are in town for their two-day conference. She says the ministers were impressed with the evidence from the report and the broad initiatives they were bringing to the table. Forward says she had a positive meeting with Health Minister Jerome Kennedy, and that he's willing to start a dialogue on how to improve health care and nursing in this province.
